“What Teachers Make”
Taylor Mali is a teacher and slam poet. You may have seen a version of this poem floating around the Internet not know that he was the original author of it. We need to keep in mind the difference we make every day in our classrooms. Vallejo has many challenges, however, for those of us who choose to teach in Vallejo, we know that we do make a difference. We know that we are counselors, nurses, moms or dads, and often provide the only stability that some of our students have ever known. YOU make a difference and that difference has value.
United we stand. Divided we fall.

VEA Rally – March 5, 2008
While the Times Herald may erroneously claim that there were “dozens of teachers in attendance,” according our count, there was actually 400 teachers showing their support at the district office on Wednesday, March 5.
For your viewing pleasure, the following are pictures that we have received showing our teachers at the district office.
Thanks to Ron West for sending these pictures.
VEA Expresses its Condolences
We would like to extend our condolences to the Soderberg family on the death of Mary Soderberg. Mrs. Soderburg touched the lives of many children as an educator for over 30 years. Her death was a shock to many of those who knew and worked with her. The Soderberg family has our deepest sympathies.
Classroom Cleanliness
Classrooms are supposed to be cleaned every day, meaning that floors are swept and garbage cans are emptied daily. Desks also are supposed to be wiped down and floors are supposed to be mopped once a week. Is this happening at your school site?
Also, Vallejo High School’s ACLU club recently filed a Williams’ Complaint form in regards to the unsanitary conditions of their bathrooms. In response, the District hired a custodian whose sole responsibility will be to keep VHS’ bathroom clean. How do teachers feel about this?
What are some topics that VEA members would like to discuss?
Please let us know in your comments. We look forward to hearing from you.
