“What Teachers Make”

Taylor Mali is a teacher and slam poet. You may have seen a version of this poem floating around the Internet not know that he was the original author of it. We need to keep in mind the difference we make every day in our classrooms. Vallejo has many challenges, however, for those of us who choose to teach in Vallejo, we know that we do make a difference. We know that we are counselors, nurses, moms or dads, and often provide the only stability that some of our students have ever known. YOU make a difference and that difference has value.

United we stand. Divided we fall.

Outrageous!

Last Wednesday, the school board agreed to send out pink slip to 190 of our unit members. Imagine our surprise when we received in our district e-mail this morning a posting for a brand new administrative position! The district continues to advertise for Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support at the starting salary of $148,825 a year and now they are advertising for Assistant Director of Elementary Education with a salary range of $86,453 to $91,853.

How many teaching positions would these two positions pay for? It is amazing to that the district seems to have plenty of money to pay for more administrative positions but no money to keep teachers in the classroom.
